To protect the privacy of individuals’ personal information by identifying consumer problems and facilitating the development of fair information practices
To educate the public on potential options for protecting the privacy of, and avoiding the misuse of, personal information
To provide information and assistance, where appropriate, to consumers in reclaiming their identity and clearing their name in the event of identity theft or identity fraud
To maintain a database of consumer complaints on issues of identity theft, identity fraud, and other privacy related issues
To investigate and assist in the prosecution of identity theft and other privacy related laws, and, as necessary and appropriate, coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the investigation of similar violations
To assist in coordinating activities of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regarding identity theft, identity fraud, and other privacy related violations of law
To make recommendations to organizations for privacy policies and practices that promote and protect the interest of Wisconsin consumers and businesses
To promote voluntary mediation of privacy related disputes where appropriate
To receive complaints from individuals concerning any person’s obtaining, compiling, maintaining, using, disclosing or disposing of personal information that may be potentially unlawful, and provide advice, information, and referral where available
To seek the input of representatives of consumers, financial institutions, merchants, credit card issuers, credit reporting agencies, law enforcement, and others concerned with privacy protection in the performance of its mission
To provide information and assistance to policymakers in the development of practices and laws to protect the privacy of Wisconsin consumers
To regularly report to the Governor on the state of privacy protection in Wisconsin
