Be wary of fake e-mails claming to come from the IRS. When you click to information about the promised refund, you are asked for information that will be used to steal your identity.
Investigators with the Office of Privacy Protection, Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, have traced some of these fake emails to foreign countries, although it is difficult to pinpoint where they originate.
The IRS doesn't contact consumers about refunds by e-mail.
For more information, call the toll free hotline of the Wisconsin Department of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection: 1-800-422-7128.
